The Style Save No. 4
Rich suede loafers, Lush cobalt blues and the Mini short but, make it a suit, sort of.
Here are this week’s style saves. Suede loafers, bright cobalt blues and mini short shorts suit pairing caught my eye and satiated those slight cravings for next season that inevitably start to creep up when the winter weather reaches its peak.
I test drove the short shorts suit, with a winter twist, and found this to be the answer I was looking for to a good yet still very me alternative to dressed up denim outfits. Not one to first pick skirts or dresses, this will be a go-to the rest of this season and into Spring, and a topic I will delve into further in an upcoming Fashion Qualifiers article.
Now, back to the subject at hand, here are my top wishlist contenders of the week.
This season it’s cool to be blue, dressed in cobalt blue that is:
Look number 36 of The Attico’s spring/summer collection pretty much sums up my ideal blue look. The hypnotic personality of this massive shearling coat is enough to make you (or me!) run to click-to-cart-buy. I can think of so many instances when I would wear this coat that would be on season and maybe something to wear for a little seasonally off-piste vibe but, then again, I wouldn’t mind a little seasonal style irreverence. But, given that it is still the height of winter, here are some very cool blue coat options to style in full denim glory (add pointed pumps a la The Attico or Adidas Gazelle to the mix).
Top Shop Brushed Overcoat at under $100 this bright blue maxi coat will perfectly adorn any and all denim outfits. Would look lovely with matching Adidas Gazelles (available at Revolve and Luisa Via Roma).
OW Mountain Coat in faux fur in a deep blue tone is the epitome of après ski cool. Pair it with some pointed toe pumps and denim for an off-duty meets après look. This pre-owned Saint Laurent pair in a matching blue is great for a tonal look and available in size 9 or this slightly aqua hue from Victoria Beckham for a playful gradient styling would work wonders with the blue of the coat and light wash denim.
Goldberg Teddy Jacket in bright blue is a sporty cool must when off the slopes this season. Think this under $800 option is a fun sub for The Attico piece (which can run in the thousands) and would look equally cool paired with the faux curly shearling Moon Boots in cream as with the aforementioned Adidas Gazelle sneakers (see above for links).
Penny loafer, driving loafer, boat shoe loafer … I’ll take one of each, please but, first and most definitely the:
Sebago Portland Suede Fringe Boat Shoe - This shoe would pretty much be my go-to shoe going into next season. I have already dreamt up several looks with these shoes and how their quintessential summer, no make that weekend!, vibes are just what the [style] doctor ordered to breath some life into winter and then into winter-transitioning to Spring outfits.
Pair with slouchy denim and a classic marinière plus, an oversized coat for now and a pair of those short shorts and a waist or hip length toggle coat for later. (*yes, this will be an outfit I will test drive in the upcoming FQ article, stay tuned). Here is a shearling toggle coat for now during these last cold winter days and a wool hooded version for transitioning into Spring. For now, this ribbed crewneck striped pullover or even better this quarter zip up and under $100 option plus, this lush coat will do the trick.
Khaite Alessio Suede Loafer - It’s velvet suede and rich chocolate hue are just dreamy. It is definitely a laid-back luxury piece which would pair equally well with a relaxed trousers a la Stella McCartney SS24 collection and (sub oversized blazer for a) tank top as it would with sheer dress as a lush contrasting element to the airy nature of the flowing gown. Plus, Khaite shoes’ construction and attention to detail are beyond perfection.
Veronica Beard Penny Loafer - The classic caramel tone of the suede alongside the heritage penny detail and $350 price point make this loafer an elevated summer casual must. Envision this with a striped poplin oversized shirt, tailored shorts and fringed leather jacket for a cool take on preppy. Here are two fringe jackets I did a double take on and think would pair so well as a contrasting note of interest to the overall heritage vibe of the look. This one by Found is a suede jacket available in a men’s Medium but, I love the cut of the jacket plus the interesting buckles down the front so I would push the sleeves up a bit if too long and enjoy the inherent oversized feel of the jacket! Or this one by Free People which I love for its shirt jacket style and hint to western style without being overtly so.
When I’m not wearing jeans, you’ll find me in a pair of mini shorts and a jacket/blazer/coat/you name it:
Third and final (but, not least) of this week’s style snacks is the following. A statement of confidence and energy, this playful twist flips the meaning of a suit to a whole other level of confident style.
From Gucci to Khaite to Tom Ford, it doesn’t get better this next season than with a sexy pair of mini shorts (make them tailored) paired with a matching blazer or with a contrasting top in oversized proportions. For me, Gucci takes the winning styling here with its minimalist take pairing the suit with a simple tank top, gold details and a play on the “long-and-short-of-it” (pun intended). A shorts girl since I can remember, I will definitely be experimenting with various styling versions of this mini short suit.
In an ode to these Runway looks, this S/S you will see me wearing these: a pair of black tailored mini shorts, a pair of playful jacquard shorts in a gold-bronze combination and a pair of magenta pink shorts which have been in my closet for several years now and which I turn to time and time again and honestly, I think will never leave my closet (although I have thought about parting with in an effort to not default to these shorts for warmer weather dressing up however, have decided on keeping this investment for longer each and every time).
The Kelso Shorts are perfect to try out the Gucci look above with a nod to the Tom Ford glam metallic vibe. High waisted and minimalist, they will be a winning versatile piece this season. Pair with a long matching coat like this or this one or even with a blazer in a contrasting neutral hue for a play on casual office.
The Etro Brocade Embellished Shorts (and here in additional sizes, both links on sale) are my dream shorts this new season, which I just received yesterday to be exact and I am already counting the days ‘til Spring weather. I might just have to start their wear now, paired with chunky boots and with a pair of 10 dernier tights. Micro in cut and beautifully made, they are a piece that brings that perfect point of interest to any look. Just add a tank top and leather jacket and you have an effortlessly cool date night look.
The Jacquemus La Riviera Wool Micro Shorts, from the SS’19 runway collection, which are seasons old but, always just as relevant. I purchased these micro short wonders on Luisa via Roma to create an elegantly casual and very leggy look paired with just a simple tank in contrasting olive green and a pair of barely there strappy heels, to attend the LVRxCarine Roitfeld fashion show in Firenze. What an experience, what a night complete with all the Supers, impeccable fashion and a concert by the inimitable Lenny Kravitz. I can remember every detail from that night from the golden hour views of the city, to the warm breeze that blew through just as the show was about to begin with the first of the many dream of dresses that manifested that evening. I digress however, this proves a point how a strong little micro pair of shorts can be just as important as a little black dress, at least in my styling book.
Here, are some very good options for the magenta shorts, tank top and barely there heels including the exact La Riviera wool shorts on Vestiaire Collective plus, some alternatives here: option 1, option 2, option 3.
Spring is just around the corner but, I am just about to land in winter wonderland for one last round of powder snow skiing and cozy après ski style. I will report back on our family ski trip guide, soon. Ciao!
